Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized that this decision protects the communication of the citizens.

According to Faeser, critical components in the core network must be removed by the end of 2026, while management systems in access and transport networks must be replaced by the end of 2029. Faeser stated that the risks posed by the use of Chinese components in German 5G networks had been thoroughly examined and that a clear decision has now been made, bringing more security to the citizens.

The measures aim to protect the central nervous systems of Germany's economic location and reduce security risks. Faeser highlighted the necessity to avoid one-sided dependencies and to strengthen Germany's independence and resilience.

Vodafone commented on the decision, stating that it is technically challenging but feasible. The mobile operators welcomed the agreement as it provides the necessary predictability for infrastructure investments.

China reacted critically to the reports, urging Germany to make reasonable decisions and to create a non-discriminatory market environment. Chinese technology in the 5G network expansion has been controversial for years, as there are concerns that China could gain access to German mobile networks through providers like Huawei.

In the Bundestag, however, there is resistance to the decision. Deputy Green parliamentary group leader Konstantin von Notz criticized the delay, stating that allowing companies to remove components only after several years poses a significant security risk. Union digital expert Rainer Brandl also expressed his confusion about why the coalition government took more than two years to decide on the exclusion of Chinese components from the German mobile network.
